Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a special version of DEXi/DEXiWin for Linux or Mac?

No, sorry. There are only versions of DEXi and DEXiWin for Windows.
We would love to have a cross-platform interactive editor of DEX models. However, we currently do not have the resources to undertake this development, nor are there plans to do so in the near future. That said, please see the next question…

Do DEXi and DEXiWin run on Linux?

Yes. Both DEXi and DEXiWin can run on Linux, provided that a suitable Windows compatibility layer (such as Wine), capable of running Windows programs, is installed on the system. Please see Running DEXi and DEXiWin on Linux about our experience with installing and running DEXi/DEXiWin using Wine on Linux Mint and Ubuntu.

There are other tools that simplify the integration and installation of Windows apps on Linux. One of them is Bottles, for which we can confirm that it is capable of running both DEXi and DEXiWin (using the "sys-wine-10.0" environment settings).

On Linux, DEXi and DEXiWin will always look non-native and "Window-ish". Depending on the Wine installation and provided capabilities, some features may not work (such as metafiles, which is a Windows-specific vector graphic format) and the running programs may keep displaying multiple messages and warnings (which can be generally ignored). Anyway, the DEX-modelling functionality is supported as well as on Windows.

Do DEXi and DEXiWin run on Mac?

In principle, yes. The macOS operating system is based on Linux and there is Wine available for Macs, so in principle this should work as well as on any other Linux system. However, we do not have much first-hand experience with that. Several years ago, we successfully run DEXi using Wine on macOS version called High Sierra. We do not have any experience with DEXiWin, which is technically more demanding.

Mac users, we'd love to hear from you. Your feedback, suggestions, and experiences are greatly appreciated.
